oikos models

Slovenia based company Oikos has hit the nail on the head in terms of sustainable modular housing. Clean Scandinavian design and versatility can be seen in each of the 5 models. The homes modularity makes it especially appealing for those not interested in creating permanent dwelling as the home can be picked up and placed on a new foundation down the road. The modular houses currently ship throughout the EU, fingers crossed they someday decide will across the Atlantic.

camp kent

LAMAS, a Toronto based architecture studio, transformed an old group of camp buildings into a family home located in Kent, CT, aptly named  "Camp Kent". The winterized house now provides a year-round retreat and an escape to the country for the owners. The outdoors are the focus of all interior spaces, an almost blank canvas inside draws the eyes outside. A nod to the camps' history can be seen in the rough sawn knotted pine that blankets the walls and ceilings in the structure.

mirrored forest retreat

The mountains of Monterrey, Mexico are home to a modern marvel that practically disappears into the surrounding landscape. Los Terrenos (the terrains) was designed by renowned Mexico City based architect Tatiana Bilbao. The structure was made using elementary components of rammed earth, terracotta clay bricks, and mirrored glass. The materials used allow the finishes to be front and center, textured clay tiles, unfinished wood, and minimal decor contrast the sleek reflective exterior of the project. The result is a modern retreat that takes advantage of its surroundings while creating a simple escape.

binge worthy: ugly delicious

We were blessed with 6 inches of fresh snow yesterday meaning a new Netflix binge is now necessary. March in the tundra is not for the faint-hearted. Ugly Delicious however is the perfect antidote to being cooped up and stir crazy. Chef David Chang (Momofuku titan) and Food Critic Peter Meehan take viewers on a tour de force with eight episodes focused each on a general food, while diving into food culture and food politics.

The show is an eye opener for novices and self-proclaimed foodies alike. Cameos by food obsessed Aziz Ansari, Renee Redzepi (Noma chef), and Jimmy Kimmel also are spattered throughout the series. Ugly Delicious is more than your everyday food documentary and is highly recommended by this food lover.

hotel bienvenue

January in Minnesota brings snow, below zero temps,  black ice, and naturally day dreaming of a warm escape. Cue the newly opened Hotel Bienvenue located in Paris' 9th district on rue Buffault, Adrien Gloauen's latest venture with French interior designer Chloé Negre. A pastel palette reflecting the English countryside merges with modern graphic and linear furniture design.

The hotel at once feels like a stay at a friends house (albeit a VERY chic friend that designed all the furniture and lighting themselves.) It is not hard to imagine a day spent wandering the streets of Paris, croissant in hand and heading back home to this little slice of design heaven.
